A parent shouldn’t have to worry if chemicals are in their baby’s mattress. Our store carries organic bedding for a baby’s crib by Naturepedic and EcoBaby. All types of mattresses are made from organic fabrics, including 100% certified organic cotton, natural wool, and rubber. The organic baby mattresses have no chemicals in the fabric finish, residue, and dyes and are not bleached. In addition organic mattresses by EcoBaby are compliant with standards by the National Association of Organic Mattress Industry (NAOMI). NAOMI specifies for a mattress to be considered “organic,” the fabric must not be synthetic or treated with chemicals suspected of being toxic, and all inner and hidden fabrics, including cotton batting and silk, must be certified organic. Wool fabric must be from organically raised sheep and free of polyester threads, arsenic, and lead. Rubber and glue in an organic mattress must also be free from chemicals. If a mattress does not meet all of these standards, it is considered “natural,” but if it meets or surpasses all standards, it is organic.

Aside from organic cotton mattresses, EcoBaby makes organic rubber baby crib mattresses. This type of mattress has a 4-inch rubber core with quilted cotton fabric made from batting, organic cotton, and Pure Grow wool. The rubber makes the mattress firmer and durable – it has a ten-year warranty – and the wool is a natural flame-retardant material. Wool is also water resistant, bacterial resistant, and has dust mite control properties.

According to a recent scientific study by GEM Testing and Engineering Labs, most crib mattress material has been replaced by cheap petroleum-based synthetics like vinyl, polyurethane, phthalates, chemical fire retardants, and other industrial chemicals. The increased usage of such harmful chemicals has been correlated with an increase in childhood disorders, particularly because when children use these mattresses, they are within six inches of harmful chemical materials. Babies and toddlers spend 70 percent of his or her time on a mattress, and out of that time is 10 to 14 hours per day sleeping on a crib mattress.
